Shiatsu point of the week – Lung 1
July 16th, 2007Lung 1 or ZhongFu (Central Residence)
Lung 1 can be found at the level of the first intercostal space, 6 cun lateral to the chest.
In shiatsu, we use this point to calm coughing, wheezing, asthma and also to help the function of the Lung (in TCM terms). So this point is said to help descend Lung Qi. I find this point great to massage on myself – especially if I feel like my breathing is a bit shallow or a bit strained. A bit of shiatsu on Lung 1 really helps me to breathe deeper, and cliched though it is, can feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders – it’s a point that can create a sense of great relief!
Lung 1 is also one of the points that can be used to help calm asthma attacks, which could be handy if the humid weather we are having at the moment triggers an asthma attack in someone.
Here is a picture of the location of ZhongFu.
