Repetitive strain injury
July 18th, 2007One of my colleagues is off work today having an operation on his elbow to try and cure chronic repetitive strain injury (RSI). Years of computer work has taken its toll and he will probably be out of action for a few weeks if everything goes well.
RSI is horrible and once it is at such a chronic stage, often the only solution is to have an operation. It is a good reminder that prevention is better than the cure. For those of us who spend long hours at a desk, it is essential to pay attention to any pain that we start experiencing in our arms and hands and take action immediately. Taking frequent breaks, keeping good posture and stretching the hands, arms and back all help. And of course, booking a shiatsu is a great way to help keep RSI under control.

I nearly had that elbow operation in 2003. In the end I didn’t trust the neurologist; I felt he didn’t really know what was wrong so he was going to have a poke around and see what happened. I can cope with a mechanic doing that on my car, maybe, but not a surgeon doing that on my arms! But, it was all part of the chain of events that got me to where I am today, so I guess I should thank him
I hope your colleague recovers well.

I started replying to this here but it got way too long. I turned it into an article instead. Enjoy!
Oh, and thanks for the link!
