Even american psychos need shiatsu

August 13th, 2007

I was leafing through American Psycho yesterday, wondering if I should give it a re-read, and stumbled on a few references to shiatsu. Maybe not the best marketing for shiatsu, but a little less than half way through the book, I found this quote:

“Ah, cheer up, Bateman” he says, slapping me on the back, then massaging my neck. “What’s the matter? No shiatsu this morning?”

That’s the last mention of shiatsu in the book. I can’t help but notice that he starts his killing spree after this little exchange in the book……hmmmm yup, that right, he turns completely psycho after he stops having shiatsu……maybe there’s something in that? lol :)

I saw Lost in Translation for the first time last week. Bill Murray mentions having shiatsu to fix a stiff neck to Scarlett Johansson. He reports that the is stiffness has gone and replaced with excruciating pain! But I have heard that Japanese shiatsu can be rough and one of my teachers who worked briefly with Masunaga did call him a “killer”.

Also shiatsu has been mentioned in the Sopranos; just before the mobsters assaulted Lauren Bacall.
