Latte Art

October 12th, 2007

There’s a nice cafe at the top of Snow and Rock near Covent Garden that I like to have coffee in now and then. It’s always strangely quiet in there, which suits me fine, because I can enjoy my coffee without jostling with tons of people all vying for the only free table in one of the corporate coffee conglomerates down at street level.

What makes the coffee there extra-nice though is the little leaf pattern they always manage to make in the foam on the top of my latte. I’ve been wondering how they do it. I’ve tried a few times to stand at the counter and watch them, but the baristas there are very friendly and always offer to bring your coffee to your table so no luck there.

Anyway, the Internet came to the rescue, and I’ve discovered what is called latte art. Check out a few of these examples over at Coffee Geek. They even have a guide so you can try your hand at a little latte art yourself.

That reminds of the last time I was in Italy and wondered into a coffee shop with my translated English sentence carefully pre-composed, so I at least could be under the illusion that I was a local. “Due latte per favore”……the barista gave me a strange look, but went about getting my drinks ready and presented me with two large glasses of milk……. :) Talk about sticking out like a stupid tourist.
