Introduction to Homeopathy
August 28th, 2008When we attended the Harrow NCT Healthy day to offer free shiatsu massages, we met Kiran Grover who was organising the day. Kiran is a homeopath and runs the Healthy Homeopathy Clinic. Since I really know nothing about homeopathy, Kiran agreed to write an introduction to homeopathy for my blog, and I wrote a small introduction to shiatsu massage for her newsletter! Here it is:

What is Homeopathy?
Many people have heard of Homeopathy but are not sure what it is.
Homeopathy is a holistic medicine that stimulates the body’s own healing power. Homeopathy can work alone or alongside any medication you may be receiving from your GP. Homoeopathic treatment is designed around the individual, specific to their condition and character; a unique prescription.
Homeopathy values you as an individual above all, taking in to account your personal lifestyle and your specific symptoms, rebalancing mental, emotional and physical health.
What are homeopathic remedies?
Homeopathy is gentle and effective as Homeopathic remedies are highly diluted quantities of substances derived from a variety of plants, minerals and other materials to stimulate the body’s own healing. They may be used for both prevention and treatment of disease and are specifically designed to suit you and your individual needs. They are non-addictive and free from side effects, safe enough even to give to babies and children or take in pregnancy.
At the Healthy Homeopathy Clinic we have a particular interest in Women’s Health, PMT, fertility, pregnancy, birth etc. (We run popular special fertility and pregnancy programmes).
Homeopathy could also help with many complaints, we often treat…
• Allergies
• Eczema
• Hay fever
• Asthma
• Stress
• Anxiety
• Skin complaints
• Digestive disorders
• Insomnia
• Depression
• Fatigue
Many people are aware that Homeopathy can help with long term conditions such as eczema, arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, hormonal issues and others. But Homeopathy can also help in first aid situations as it’s quick to act and is effective in relieving symptoms and helping the body stimulate its own healing process.
First Aid tips
Bumps and Bruises
Many people are aware of Arnica and it is a great first remedy for knocks and bumps especially if there is bruising and shock. Arnica cream is also good for bruising and helps to minimise damage and speed up the healing process.
Cuts and Scrapes
For wounds, cuts and grazes wipe the area first with some water and a clean cloth, and then use Calendula ointment on the affected area as it will speed up the healing process. It is gentle and antiseptic and can be applied directly to the affected area.
Bites and Stings
If a bee sting needs to be treated Apis is a useful remedy to take particularly if the area is red, hot, puffy and swollen. Look for the affected area being bright red, feeling hot and sensitive to touch, occasionally with fluid retention. The area will feel worse for heat and better for cool applications.
Nose Bleeds
When there are nose bleeds especially in children Ferrum Phos can be very useful. Phosphorus can be effective if the nose bleed has started with the nose being blown.
Indigestion
Anxiety with indigestion and a great thirst can be helped by Ars Alb. A sluggish and bloated feeling with trapped wind can be helped by Carbo Veg. If there is indigestion with heartburn then try Nux Vom, particularly if it’s caused by over indulgence!
Nausea and Vomiting
When nausea or vomiting is caused by food poisoning or anxiety, with burning or cramping stomach pains and a great thirst for water then use Ars Alb. If there is constant and violent nausea which is not relieved by vomiting, with no desire to drink water then take Ipecac. If there is frequent retching but unsuccessful vomiting, this could have been from over indulgence so take Nux Vom!
Homeopathy is widely available in Chemists, and Health Food shops, do try some for your minor illnesses. If you suffer from long term complaints then please do contact us for an informal chat to see if Homeopathy is suitable for you and your family, we look forward to hearing from you today!
