Sit Down!

October 16th, 2007

One of the great things about Shiatsu is that it is practiced at floor level. Yep, down there, on a futon, on the floor. You’ll have to bend your knees……Not something we are generally used to as adults. We spend most of our time slumped in chairs, hunched over computers, or slouched on our sofas watching the TV. We don’t spend much time sitting or moving around on the floor though. I remember as a kid, I was always on the ground, sitting cross-legged at school assembly, or rolling around outside on the grass, or playing with toys on the floor. Even playing video-games, I would sit on the floor instead on a sofa.

Sitting or moving around at ground level, helps keep our backs and hips flexible which can really help stave off back pain. This kind of flexibility is just not fostered sitting in chairs and on sofas. I especially notice this in older clients, who find it much more difficult to sit cross-legged on a futon without bracing themselves with their hands than some of my younger clients. Its natural as we get older to lose some flexibility, but I think we can slow the process down a little by getting back to ground level now and then.

Throw away your sofa, watch TV sitting on the floor……Sit Down :)
