Immunotherapy and cancer

June 19th, 2008

So this is still in its infancy, but a cancer patient has been free from cancer for 2 years following immunotherapy.  Basically, what that means is, doctors cloned cells from the man’s own body that were found to attack the cancer cells, and injected the cloned cells back into the patient.  The patient had advanced skin cancer that had spread to his lymph nodes and one lung before the treatment.  Eight weeks afterwards, he was free of tumours and two years down the line, he is still free of cancer.

One patient doesn’t make a study obviously, and the technique can apparently only be used on patients with a particular type of immune system and tumour types, but it obviously deserves more research.   If you are interested, go read a little more about this.
